Abstract

This study analyses the strategic approaches employed by tahfiz teachers to optimise memorisation outcomes by fostering an increased interest in memorising the Qur’an amongst adolescent students. Using a qualitative approach with a single-case study design at Imam Bukhori Junior High School in Gondangrejo, Karanganyar, data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation and documentation, which were then analysed inductively and descriptively and validated via triangulation. The research findings indicate that the sustainable optimisation of memorisation outcomes is achieved through the convergence of a triadic set of teacher strategies: affective (personal counselling and a reward ecosystem), spiritual (internalisation of theological values and the demonstration of exemplary behaviour), and technical-pedagogical (interactive application of the talaqqi and tikrar methods, and management of the Sabaq-Sabqi-Manzil system). These strategies were intensively implemented through a micro-halaqah format with a mentor-to-student ratio of 1:10. This integrative model proved effective in transforming the psychological character of adolescents from situational interest towards a well-established individual interest, whilst simultaneously eliminating stagnation in memorisation caused by the rigidity of the formal academic curriculum. This research offers a methodological framework for the management of Islamic educational institutions, demonstrating that the success of tahfiz programmes does not rely solely on quantitative targets, but rather on strengthening the affective dimension and managing students’ interests in a holistic manner.
